Abstract

Lead sulphate is produced by reacting upon a suspension of lead chloride with zinc sulphate under such conditions that the zinc chloride solution obtained is of more than about 20 per cent strength, or by heating solid lead chloride and crystallized zinc sulphate to 300-400 DEG C. and extracting the zinc chloride. A lead zinc sulphide ore may be heated with zinc chloride to convert the lead into chloride. The chloride is extracted with hot brine containing a little acid, and the zinc sulphide residue is roasted to zinc sulphate and leached with water or dilute sulphuric acid to obtain zinc sulphate which is then reacted with the lead chloride obtained from the brine. The solution of zinc chloride may be divided into two parts, one part being made up for use again by adding the necessary quantities of zinc sulphate, water, and lead chloride, while the other part is treated with sulphuric acid to obtain zinc sulphate and hydrochloric acid, or it may be regarded as a product in itself, in which case it may be freed from lead by treatment with metallic zinc.
