Abstract

295,227. Haglund, T. R. May 2, 1927. Aluminium oxide and sulphate. - Aluminium sulphidiferous material is first treated to convert the aluminium sulphide into oxide under such conditions that sulphide impurities are left substantially unaffected and then these impurities are removed by treatment of the mass with chlorine or chlorine compounds or mixtures thereof, or with chlorides, sulphates and nitrates or other salts of such metals as are precipitated by sulphuretted hydrogen in acid solution, so that sulphides of metals such as iron titanium or calcium are converted into volatile or soluble salts. Before treatment with chlorine, corundum crystals are separated from the decomposition product, and aluminium hydrate is heated to convert it to oxide. The treatment with chlorine hydrogen chloride, sulpho-chlorides, or aluminium chloride preferably proceeds at above 100‹ C. and so that chlorides of iron and titanium are volatilized. Aluminium hydrate during or after the treatment is heated preferably in a neutral or reducing atmosphere to form aluminium oxide with low solubilitv in acids. Part of the hydrate obtained is converted into chloride and is heated in a moist atmosphere whereby aluminium hydrate is formed and sulphides of impurities are converted to chlorides. Chlorine is used as a gas, liquefied, under pressure or in solution or dry, and chlorides formed may be dissolved out with water. The products during treatment may be stirred in water, and a reducing substance such as hydrogen sulphide or aluminium sulphide added to prevent precipitation of basic iron salts. If the decomposition product is alkaline it is neutralized before treatment with chlorine, and on treating it in water with chlorides, sulphates or nitrates of metals such copper, lead, arsenic, antimony or tin which are precipitated by hydrogen sulphide in acid solution, sulphides of these metals are precipitated, and metallic impurities dissolved and filtered off. The aluminium hydroxide is then dissolved in an acid, such as sulphuric acid. The decomposition product may be subjected to magnetic separation. Specification 232,549 is referred to.
