Abstract

To obtain a purified feedwater free from soluble compounds, hard water is treated with phosphoric acid, either alone or together with barium compounds soluble in phosphoric acid, and subsequently with hydroxide of ammonium, hydroxide of calcium or magnesium also being used when there is much sulphate in the water. For water containing both carbonate and sulphate, a quantity of barium salt equivalent to the sulphate is added to the phosphoric acid to precipitate the sulphate. Excess of phosphoric acid is removed by means of limewater or magnesium hydroxide and the soluble phosphates formed are converted into insoluble phosphates on addition of ammonium hydroxide until an alkaline reaction is shown. For water containing carbonate without sulphate, the equivalent quantity of phosphoric acid is added and then ammonia only. The sludge obtained may be used for the recovery of phosphoric acid or as a fertilizer.
