Abstract
Metaphosphoric acid or a soluble metaphosphate, such as ammonium, sodium or potassium metaphosphate, is added to natural water containing a calcium compound, in substantially less than the stoichiometric amount with reference to the calcium compound, in order to prevent or delay the precipitation of calcium carbonate, or ensure that a finely divided non-adherent precipitate is produced, when ammonia is added to the water. Water so treated may be used as irrigation water for supplying ammonia to soils.
