Abstract

A double phosphate containing alkali metal, e.g. sodium or potassium, calcium, and combined sulphur in such a form as to be unreactive with water and carbon dioxide and which is free from alkali or alkaline-earth metal sulphides is obtained by mixing phosphate rock, an alkali metal sulphate, and an active carbonaceous reducing agent and heating the mixture to 700--900 DEG C. until the phosphate is completely decomposed. A rotary kiln may be used for the heating step, and the reducing agent may be powdered lignite or electrically precipitated lignite dust, charcoal or a reactive carbon. Advantageously sodium sulphate is used in the form of Glauber's salt, and 1,8 to 1,9 mols. of the salt may be used per mol. of calcium phosphate. Examples of operation are given.
