Abstract
Water-soluble chlorites, such as sodium or calcium chlorite, are obtained by introducing chlorine dioxide into an aqueous medium containing the requisite alkaline material and a carbonaceous reducing agent. As alkaline material the free base is preferably employed, but the carbonate may also be used, and the reducing agent may be coke, carbon, charcoal, wood, sawdust, paper pulp, sucrose, glucose, or levulose. Good distribution of any reacting materials in suspension is obtained by employing them in a fine state of subdivision and agitating the reaction mixture. In examples using various reducing agents temperatures from 20--50 DEG C., are used, but any temperature between the freezing and boiling points of the solutions may be employed.
