Abstract

258,048. Synthetic Ammonia &. Nitrates, Ltd., and Coxon, T. July 23, 1925. Ammonium carbonate and bicarbonate.-Solid compounds of ammonia, carbon dioxide and water in a substantially dry condition are produced from ammonium carbamate by treating the latter with carbon dioxide in the presence of water. In an example ammonium carbamate is precipitated by passing carbon dioxide and ammonia into water or other solution, at ordinary or higher pressure, and is removed continuously. The moist crystals are treated with carbon dioxide or gases containing carbon dioxide such as furnace or lime-kiln gases, whereby a dry product practicall identical in composition with commercial ammonium carbonate is obtained. By adding water or steam to the crystals more carbon dioxide is required, and the composition can thus be varied. Part of the water may be combined as solid ammonium bicarbonate by using at first a mixture of ammonia and carbondioxide; the remaining water however is removed by union with the carbamate and the carbon dioxide.
