279,530. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 26, 1926. Hydrocyanic acid; sodium cyanide. - Hydrocyanic acid is obtained by submitting vapour of formamide in the absence of other gases to the catalytic action of natural or artificial zeolites, calcium chloride or alkali carbonates. The production of carbon monoxide and ammonia is thus minimized. In an example sodium zeolite is employed at 400-450‹ C., and anhydrous sodium carbonate at 400‹ C. In the latter case some of the hydrocyanic acid reacts with the sodium carbonate forming sodium cyanide, so that the carbonate must be replaced by fresh quantities from time to time.
