Abstract
In the production of hydrogen cyanide by the catalytic oxidation of a mixture of gaseous hydrocarbons and ammonia, the resulting gaseous mixture containing unreacted ammonia and hydrogen cyanide is contacted with an aqueous monoammonium phosphate solution to remove ammonia therefrom, the resulting solution of diammonium phosphate containing a part of the hydrogen cyanide in solution heated to liberate ammonia therefrom and the gaseous mixture of ammonia and hydrogen cyanide thus obtained contacted with a solution of caustic alkali to produce a gaseous ammonia substantially free from hydrogen cyanide. The alkali cyanide so produced may be used to give further quantities of hydrogen cyanide by acidification. Preferably the water vapour pressure of the solution of caustic alkali should be substantially the same as the partial pressure of water vapour in the gaseous mixture of ammonia and hydrogen cyanide, and the concentration of the caustic alkali should not be greater than 70 per cent.
