Abstract
258,154. Blackburn, H. W., and Thomas, W. June 9, 1925. Ammonia, catalytic production of from nitrogen and hydrogen.-Ammonia is produced) by passing a mixture of nitrogen and steam over heated carbon, the steam being present in substantial excess of the quantity theoretically required. Preferably the ratio of steam to nitrogen present is 4 : 1 by weight. The process is advantageously effected at a slightly increased pressure of, for .example, two atmospheres. The temperature of the reaction lies between 450‹ and 1300‹ C.; a temperature of 800‹ C. is preferably employed. The gaseous reaction mixture may be preheated. According to the example, a mixture of superheated steam and nitrogen in the proportions of 4 : 1 by weight is passed at a pressure of nearly two atmospheres through an iron chamber containing charcoal and maintained at a temperature of 800‹ C. ; the ammonia produced is absorbed in dilute sulphuric acid.
