Abstract
257,689. Blackburn, H. W., and Thomas, W. June 9, 1925. Ammonia, catalytic production of from nitrogen and hydrogen.-Ammonia is produced by passing a hot mixture of nitrogen and steam over iron or the lower oxides and hydroxides of iron or nickel. The steam is present in substantial excess of the quantity theoretically equivalent to the nitrogen, preferably in the ratio of 4:1 by weight. When iron is employed as catalyst, the presence of nickel exercises a promoting effect. Advantageously, the process is effected at a slightly increased pressure of, for example, two atmospheres. The temperature conditions vary with the catalyst employed and the gaseous reaction mixture may be preheated. According to the example, a mixture of superheated steam and nitrogen in the proportions of 4:1 by weight is passed at a pressure of nearly two atmospheres through an iron chamber containing heated nickelous hydroxide and the ammonia produced is absorbed in dilute sulphuric acid.
