Sulphur trioxide, catalytic production of.-The catalytic oxidation of sulphur dioxide is conducted continuously in a closed circuit, a quantity of sulphur dioxide and oxygen equal to the amount combined and removed by absorption in sulphuric acid being added to the gases after each cycle before they are re-passed over the catalyst. The heat of the gases leaving the catalytic chamber is utilized in a heat exchanger to preheat the gases entering the catalytic chamber. Preferably pyrites cinders are employed as the catalyst and the ratio of sulphur dioxide to oxygen is varied according to the catalyst in order to produce a substantially constant quantity of sulphur trioxide. A diluent such as nitrogen may be used to moderate the reaction.
