Abstract

Waste gas containing hydrogen sulphide and carbon disulphide both in such low concentration that the gas mixture is non-inflammable, is treated for the recovery of sulphur values therein as sulphuric acid by catalytic oxidation. The waste gas, containing or mixed with oxygen or air, is pre-heated by heat exchange with already reacted gas to a temperature at which reaction will take place over a catalyst for the production of sulphur trioxide, the pre-heated gas being passed over such a catalyst and the sulphur trioxide formed converted into sulphuric acid in known manner. The waste gas may or may not also contain carbon oxysulphide and/or sulphur. The invention is particularly concerned with waste gases occuring in viscose manufacture. According to an example a waste gas mixture which is saturated with moisture at 25 DEG C. and contains 0.61 per cent carbon disulphide and 0.79 per cent hydrogen sulphide is pre-heated by already reacted gas to 200 DEG C. and passed over a vanadium catalyst arranged in layers. The reacted gas is then cooled by the pre-heating of the incoming gas to a temperature of 260-360 DEG C., at which temperature formation of condensate in the reacted gas cannot take place. The reacted gas is then passed through a tower fed with 78 per cent sulphuric acid which circulates through a cooler. The acid mist formed is electrostatically precipitated, if desired after moistening the gas with water and the acid flowing from the electro filter may be passed to the cycle of the absorption tower. The catalytic apparatus is preferably arranged for a reversal of the direction of flow of gas whereby the two ends of the catalyst bed are successively subjected to a gas entry temperature of about 200 and a gas exit temperature of about 400 DEG C. Conventional catalyst such as the metals of group 1 and 3-8 of the periodic table may be used and such catalysts may be regenerated by treating them at above 400 DEG C. with sulphur dioxide and excess of oxygen.
