Abstract

Sulphur is produced by catalytically oxidising hydrogen sulphide to sulphur dioxide with air in at least 35% of a gas containing 1-5% of hydrogen sulphide, the amount of air employed being stoichiometrically equivalent to the hydrogen sulphide content of one third of the hydrogen sulphide-containing gas, admixing the oxidised gas with the remainder of the hydrogen sulphide-containing gas, and catalytically interacting the hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide in the mixture to produce sulphur. The hydrogen sulphide-containing gas may be produced in the regeneration of potash liquor employed in washing synthetic gas obtained from fuel oil. The oxidation catalyst may be active carbon or zinc, iron, nickel or titanium sulphide. The sulphide may be supported or activated alumina or corundum, and may be formed in situ. A mixed or promoted catalyst may be employed. Oxidation may take place at 250-400 DEG C., and a space velocity of 1000 s.cu.ft./hr/cu.ft. The sulphur-production catalyst may be activated alumina or titania, and the reaction temperature is preferably between the dew point of sulphur and 15 DEG C. above this temperature, e.g. 210 DEG C. The sulphur may be removed in a ring-packed washer-cooler type condenser. The remaining gas may be mixed with hot combustion gas containing excess oxygen from an oil or gas burner and passed over activated alumina or iron-bauxite at 350-400 DEG C., or nickel, copper, or copper-cadmium sulphate supported on activated alumina at a lower temperature. The resulting sulphur dioxide-containing gas may be passed in indirect heat exchange with the gases to be treated in each stage of the process. Specification 769,996 is referred to.
