Abstract
In the separation of sulphur oxides from waste gases by reaction of the gases with ammonia and water to form ammonium sulphite, which is oxidized in the presence of catalysts to ammonium sulphate, active carbon is used as the catalyst and the amount of ammonia is equivalent to or less than equivalent to the amount of oxides of sulphur. The active carbon used is preferably that which has been activated by steam. The O2-containing gas used for the oxidation may be the gas containing the oxides of sulphur or another gas, e.g. air. The reaction may be carried out, in a reaction tower containing filler bodies or baffles, at a temperature depending on the temperature of the sulphur oxide gases, but advantageously above 30 DEG C. The waste gases may be practically free from water, so that they should be moistened with hot water or an appropriate mixture of steam and water, the moisture content being so adjusted that the reaction proceeds at a practically constant temperature and an (NH4)2SO4 solution of constant concentration is formed. Loss of ammonia is avoided by limiting the NH3 addition to an amount necessary for the formation of an (NH4)2SO4 solution which has a pH value less than 6,8.
