Abstract
1430786 Sulphur dioxide containing gas DAVY POWERGAS GmbH 7 June 1973 [8 June 1972] 27140/73 Heading C1A An aqueous wash solution containing ammonium salts of sulphurous acid and optionally of sulphuric acid, or from a waste sulphuric acid containing an ammonium salt of sulphuric acid is sprayed into a reaction chamber in which it is heated to a temperature of from 850‹ to 1200‹ C. in the presence of an excess of molecular oxygen-, the excess being maintained such that the gas leaving the chamber has a content of molecular oxygen of from 0À5 to 2À9 volume per cent. The aqueous wash solution may result from the ammonia washing of an SO 2 -containing gas and may contain ammonium sulphite, ammonium hydrogen sulphite and optionally ammonium sulphate. The salts are split thermally to give an SO 2 -containing gas. The temperature in the reaction chamber may be maintained by burning a fuel gaseous at normal temperature such as natural gas or methane. The split gas may be worked up in known manner by contact oxidation and absorption of the oxidized gas to form sulphuric acid, or reduced to form elemental sulphur.
