325,475. Johason, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 12, 1928. Ammonia, catalytic oxidation of.-Nitrous oxide is prepared by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia. Ammonia, mixed with oxygen, air or gases containing oxygen, preferably in excess of that required to produce nitrous oxide, is passed over a catalyst such as platinum, iron oxide mixed with bismuth or manganese oxide, or copper oxide mixed with manganese dioxide to which silver may be added, heated to a temperature below 550‹ C. and preferably between 200 and 400‹ C. The gases are passed over the catalyst at a low speed whereby reaction products practically free from higher oxides of nitrogen are obtained, the higher oxides being obtained if the speed is increased. Nitrous oxide may be separated from the reaction gases by compression or cooling or by absorbents or solvents. A reaction mixture rich in nitrous oxide may be obtained by passing the gases in succession through several catalyst chambers, ammonia being added at intermediate stages, or, when using pure oxygen, by passing the gases in a closed circuit over the catalyst part of the gases being withdrawn from one part of the circuit and fresh gases added at another part.
