Abstract
The process of the parent Specification is improved by employing an oxygen-containing gas containing "nitrous vapours," which phrase denotes any gas or vapour containing nitrogen in combination with oxygen such as nitric acid vapours or other gases containing oxides of nitrogen, particularly those containing nitric oxide. The proportion of nitrous vapour used is preferably less than 10 per cent by volume of the oxidizing-gas mixture. The heating period is reduced to from one-third to one-half of that previously needed. The process may be made cyclic by regaining the nitrous vapours from the discharged reaction gases, e.g. by absorbing them in sulphuric acid, desorbing the sulphuric acid by heating, and supplying the liberated nitrous vapours to the oxygen-containing gas in which the solid carbonaceous material is heated.ALSO:The process of the parent Specification is improved by employing an oxygen-containing gas containing "nitrous vapours," which phrase denotes any gas or vapour containing p nitrogen in combination with oxygen such as nitric acid vapours or other gases containing oxides of nitrogen, particularly those containing nitric oxide.
