Abstract
In the production of ethylene oxide from ethylene and oxygen in the presence of a silver catalyst such as those described in Specifications 466,416 and 472,629, pure oxygen or commercial oxygen containing up to 2 per cent of inert gas is used, and not more than 60 per cent of the ethylene is reacted per pass, while at least 60 per cent of the exit gases (after removal of the ethylene oxide formed) are recycled in admixture with fresh ethylene and oxygen. The ethylene oxide is absorbed in dilute sulphuric acid to give glycols. A small quantity of a "moderator" such as those described in Specification 490,123 may be present in the gases, for instance a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, for instance methyl or ethyl chloride.
