Abstract

An olefine, in a gaseous reaction stream containing 1 to 6 per cent concentration of olefine by volume together with oxygen and inert gases, is selectively oxidized to olefine oxide by a process comprising passing the stream over a silver catalyst at a temperature in the range 220 DEG to 250 DEG C., removing olefine oxide from the stream, passing the stream reduced in olefine concentration and with added oxygen over a silver catalyst in a secondary reaction zone at a temperature in the same range and removing olefine oxide from the stream from the secondary reaction. The stream may in addition be recycled to either of the two zones. In the examples a gaseous reaction mixture consisting of ethylene, oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen is treated according to the process of the invention to give ethylene oxide. Specifications 687,243 and 690,718 are referred to.
