Abstract
Ethylene is oxidised to ethylene oxide at an elevated temperature in the presence of a silver catalyst by a molecular oxygen-containing gas obtained from air by distillation and which has a molar concentration of oxygen of at least 85% and in which the proportion of argon has been reduced substantially with respect to the proportion normally present. Preferably the concentrations of nitrogen and argon in the oxygen-containing gas are such that the ratio <FORM:0900376/IV (b)/1> , in which A is the number of moles of argon and N2 the number of moles of nitrogen in the mixture, is not greater than 0.6. These preferred oxygen-containing mixtures may for instance, be obtained by separating from air a fraction with a high oxygen content having a value for the ratio <FORM:0900376/IV (b)/2> in excess of 0.6 and diluting the mixture with air until the ratio has a value below 0.6, preferably about 0.1, while keeping the molar proportion of oxygen above 85%.
