Abstract

<PICT:0942341/C3/1> Steel sheet is decarburized and denitrided in a furnace 10 (see Division F4) in which the atmosphere comprises hydogren from which nitrogen compounds and carbon monoxide are removed by recycling the atmosphere through a purifier 8 while the nitrogen content thereof is reduced by bleeding off some of the atmosphere from the supply duct 9 to the furnace so that the carbon monoxide and nitrogen contents of the furnace atmosphere are each maintained below 0.5% by volume. Fresh hydrogen, e.g. from a cracking unit 4 fed with hydrocarbons, oxygen and water vapour through ducts 1, 2, 3, is passed, preferably through a first purifier 6, through the purifier 8 in admixture with the recycled atmosphere ; water vapour may be added to the furnace atmosphere from outside, e.g. through duct 19. The bled-off atmosphere may be mixed with by-product nitogren from duct 15 and used as a heat-treatment atmosphere for steel in annealing furnaces 17, 18. The steel sheet is preferably arranged in the furnace 10 by winding in spaced helices on a bobbin 11.
