Abstract
A gaseous atmosphere for the heat treatment of metals is formed by feeding hydrocarbon and oxygen (or a gaseous or vaporous oxygen containing compound) to a plasma torch and reacting them therein to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Nitrogen or a noble gas is added to the gases entering the torch and/or supplied directly to the furnace itself. Referring to the drawing, hydrocarbon is passed through a pipeline 2 and is mixed with carbon dioxide, air or oxygen supplied from pipeline 4 and nitrogen supplied from pipeline 6. The mixture is supplied to a passage 22 of a plasma torch 16 and a plasma is generated. The passage 22 is cooled by nitrogen passing through passage 24. The resultant gases consisting mainly of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen are admitted to a heat treatment furnace 18. <IMAGE>
