Abstract
1363756 Carbon monoxide; nitrogen AZOTE ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES SA and ONIA-GEGI 15 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970] 48178/71 Heading C1A Carbon monoxide and inert gas (i.e. nitrogen containing argon) are produced from liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons by partial oxidation in air in the presence of a catalyst and treating the resultant gas to obtain three fractions, (a) the desired carbon monoxide, (b) carbon dioxide and (c) a residue consisting of hydrogen and nitrogen which is burnt to obtain the inert gas. The partial oxidation is carried out at between 750‹ and 950‹ C. under a pressure ranging from atmospheric to 40 bars and preferably in the presence of steam, the molar ratio of steam to the carbon in the hydrocarbon being 0À5 to 2. As shown, a hydrocarbon CnHm is fed via line 2 into an oxidizer 14 supplied with compressed air from line 1 and compressor 11, steam in line 3 and recycled carbon dioxide from separator 15, via compressor 12 and line 4. The catalyst may be nickel supported on a refractory carrier such as alumina, magnesia or a silico-aluminate. The resultant gases pass to separator 15 which may comprise a washing tower in which CO2 is absorbed in potassium hydroxide or an ethanolamine, and a desorption tower in which the absorbent is regenerated with liberation of CO2. The liberated CO2 is led back to the oxidizer 14 as detailed above. The gas leaving the separator unit is passed to a second separator 16 in which carbon monoxide is absorbed in, e.g., ammoniacal cuprous formate or acetate from which solution the absorbed gas may be recovered. The residual gas, substantially free from oxides of carbon, is passed to a combustion unit 17 where it is burnt with compressed air in a primary chamber and finally in a chamber using a nickel-platinum catalyst without excess of air. The resultant gas is mainly nitrogen but may contain, e.g. 0À5% of argon.
