Abstract

An oxidizing heat treatment of briquettes formed from a carbonaceous material and a binding agent is carried out in a vertical furnace by circulating gases containing about 6% oxygen and heated to 200-400 DEG C. in the direction of movement of the briquettes and introducing unheated air into the moving briquettes above the entrance for the circulated, heated gases in the direction of movement of the briquettes to replace the oxygen consumed from the heated gases. The quantity of unheated air introduced may be regulated in response to the oxygen content of the gases withdrawn from the furnace. The heated, oxidized briquettes may be cooled in a neutral atmosphere.
