Abstract

A method of controlling the heat content of a charge for conversion to steel by surface blowing comprises supplying a desired amount of heat to the charge separate from the conversion process, i.e. before or after refining or between refining phases, by blowing it with a mixture of gas containing oxygen and a finely p divided oil. The mixture of oxygen and oil used for heating should be such that any excess of oxygen does not exceed 10%. The solid charge materials, i.e. scrap and lime, may be preheated and, after melting-down, the heat may be carburized before refining.
