Abstract
Fused zirconia containing not more than 1.5% silica is obtained by periodically feeding to an electric arc furnace increments of a mixture of zircon ore and sufficient carbon to reduce the silica content to silicon monoxide but insufficient to produce zirconium cyanonitride or zirconium carbide. The mixture may contain 1% to 10% of carbon, which may be petroleum coke. The mixture may be heated to above 2700 DEG C., and each increment may be 0.3% to 0.7% of the total mixture. The silicon monoxide is volatilized and removed. Examples are given.
