Abstract
867,205. Titanium carbide. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. May 28, 1957 [June 19, 1956], No. 2002/61. Divided out of 867,204. Class 1(2). Titanium carbide is produced by heating an intimate mixture of titaniferous ore, e.g. Ilmenite, Perovskite, or Sorel slag, coke, sawdust, and water in an Acheson-type resistance furnace to a temperature of at least 1500‹C. In the Acheson-type furnace heating is effected by passage of an electric current through a central core of carbon extending between two electrodes, the charge being packed around the central core. Sufficient coke is employed to effect conversion of all the titanium of the ore into carbide. The sawdust is added for porosity and the water for gas permeability. Examples are given.
