Abstract
569,011. Extracting iron. BIRMING- HAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd., and HANCOCK, P. F. April 10, 1943, No. 5761. [Class 72] In the production of powdered iron, powdered iron oxide is mixed with powdered carbon and water to form a slurry and heated to 650- 1150‹ C. in a furnace in an atmosphere of partially burnt and purified gas which is reducing to any excess of oxide in the mixture and oxidising to any excess of carbon so as to eliminate substantially any such excess in the product. Instead of carbon, a substance which, when treated, leaves a deposit of carbon, such as flour or molasses, may be used. The gaseous atmosphere contains 5-7 per cent of carbon dioxide, 10-14 of carbon monoxide, 12-15 of hydrogen, 1-3 of water vapour, the remainder being nitrogen. The hot reduced products may be cooled in a neutral or reducing atmosphere such as partially burnt and purified fuel gas which may be enriched in hydrogen, or a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen.
