Abstract

Titanium monoxide is produced by heating (a) a mixture of titanium dioxide and carbon, or (b) a mixture of titanium dioxide and titanium carbide, or (c) titanium carbide, to a temperature of at least 1,000 DEG C., preferably 1,800-2,100 DEG C. in an atmosphere of (a) water vapour, or (b) carbon monoxide, or (c) a mixture of said gases. The term "titanium dioxide" includes titanium dioxide-containing materials such as ilmenite. The initial ingredients may be ground to minus 325 mesh (Tyler standard) and briquetted. The product should be cooled in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. An induction furnace may be used, but an arc furnace is preferred. This may be of the pot type, having a water-cooled shell and a cover through which the electrode passes leaving a narrow annular opening. The electrode may have a central bore through which gas is passed into the reaction mixture. The reactants are protected from oxidation by the carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen which are formed and burn as they emerge from the annular opening. The water vapour and carbon dioxide (which must be free from nitrogen and oxygen) are added at a rate slightly in excess of that stoichiometrically necessary (equations are given), and in the case of water a large excess may be added if a corresponding quantity of carbon is used. If carbon monoxide alone is used, or in other cases where removal of residual carbon is difficult, said removal may be effected with water vapour. Examples using various starting materials are given.
