Abstract

In a process for the production of metal oxides by chlorinating oxidic ores in the presence of carbon and thereupon decomposing the chlorides formed with substantial excess of oxygen, the oxygen content of the chlorine-oxygen mixture derived from the decomposition is burnt with carbon or carbon-containing material to form carbon monoxide as the principal final combustion product in one or two reaction stages, and the hot gas mixture is used for the chlorination of more ore. Thus, the chlorine-oxygen mixture may be passed through a bed of red hot solid carbonaceous material which may be disposed at the lower part of the chlorination furnace, or it may be reacted with acetylene, vaporized oil, benzene, &c., or preferably, carbon monoxide whereby carbon dioxide is first formed which is reduced to carbon monoxide in the chlorination zone, which for this purpose contains extra carbon. Instead of pure carbon monoxide, there may be used part of the waste gases from the chlorination zone, after separation of the metal chloride. Examples describe the chlorination of rutile, and baddeleyite, followed by the decomposition of the titanium and zirconium chlorides produced. Reference is also made to the production of iron oxide.
