Abstract
Finely divided metal oxides are produced by feeding hot, burnt gases from an auxiliary flame in a separate combustion chamber, as a rectilinear moving stream into an elongated reaction chamber in a direction along or substantially parallel to the axis of the reaction chamber, and injecting a mixture of metal chloride vapour and oxygen into the periphery of the stream from a plurality of directions, each of which intersects the axis of the feed of the burnt gases (e.g. at 45 DEG -90 DEG ). Chlorides which may be used are those of Ti, Zr, Al, Sn, Cr, Fe, Si, HP, and Nb. The auxiliary flame is preferably a CO flame, and the chloride/oxygen mixture may be initially at 120 DEG -150 DEG C., while the burnt gases into which the mixture is injected may be at 1900 DEG C. Steam may be added to the O2 or CO, or AlCl3 or SiCl4 may be added to the chloride stream. The process is described in relation to apparatus described in Specification 1,047,714.
