Abstract
Ultrafine metal particles (e.g. less than 0.1m ) of Fe, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo or W are produced by introducing a stream of metal halide vapour, shielded with a co-current stream of gas, into a reaction zone where it contacts a gaseous reducing agent (H2) at 450-1300 DEG C., the product particles being quenched by passing them, prior to recovery, through a cooling zone at a temperature of less than 1300 DEG C., but not less than 300 DEG C., said temperature being less than the reaction temperature. The shielding gas disclosed is argon.
