912,636. Producing iron and other metallic particles; coating with metals. COMMONWEALTH ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Jan. 21, 1959, No. 2186/59. Classes 72, 82 (1) and 82 (2). Metallic particles (iÁ or smaller) are precipitated from a gaseous compound of the required metal by heating the compound to its decomposition temperature and thereafter rapidly cooling the gas to below the decomposition temperature so as to regulate the size of the particles. The metal compounds may be: carbonyls, hydrides, halides, nitrides and organometallic compounds. Fig. 1 shows a reaction vessel into which gaseous metal compounds are fed through one or more nozzles 12-14. Hot inert gas from centrally-mounted nozzles 11 provide the heating and decomposition zone and cool inert gas fed in at 28 provides for the cooling of the gases. Fig. 6 shows another reaction vessel in which heating zones A-D and cooling zone E are produced by feeding the appropriate hot or cold gases to chambers formed within the double walls of the vessel. The gaseous metal compounds are fed in through headers in the top of the vessel. Metal compounds which decompose in different heating zones may be used to produce a mixture of metal powders or a metal powder coated with one or more different metals. Reference is made to the production of the following combinations : W, Ag, Ni on steel ; Cu on ceramics ; Ni on Cu, Cd, Mg, brass, glass, " Teflon " (Registered Trade Mark); Al on Mg; Cr on Cu. Reference is also made to the passage of silica and colloidal clays through the reactor to produce metallic coatings thereon. The heating may also be effected by infra-red and highfrequency radiation and the metal particles may be coated with a stearate after cooling.
