Abstract
Low density metal powder, e.g. having a bulk density of less than 0,9 Kg per litre, is produced by the thermal decomposition of metal carbonyls in the free space of a heated vessel by keeping the temperature of the wall of the vessel, particularly at the point of entry of the carbonyl, at least 270 DEG C. higher than the temperature at the middle of the free space. The temperature difference may be achieved by (a) increasing the rate of carbonyl feed, (b) increasing the supply of heat to the walls or (c) the supply of cold gases or vapours. To produce very low density powders, the temperature at the middle of the free space is kept below 300 DEG C., e.g. at 230 DEG C., by supplying carbonyl to the decomposition chamber in such an amount that the effluent carbon monoxide contains undecomposed carbonyl which has, however, a partial pressure considerably below the saturation pressure of the carbonyl at room temperature. An example of the production of Ni powder is given. Ni powder and Fe-Ni powder produced by the process may be used for the manufacture of electrode frameworks, for alkaline accumulators and for porous plates and tubes. Specification 679,439 is referred to.
