Abstract
Carbonyl nickel powder in which the particles are substantially spherical is produced by decomposing the carbonyl in the presence of sufficient 'active' nitrogen to give a powder containing at least 0.01% nitrogen. The 'active' nitrogen may be produced by the reaction of nitrous oxide and hydrogen but is preferably formed from ammonia and oxygen in the range 0.75-4 parts ammonia to one part of oxygen by volume. Nitrogen may readily be removed from the powder by heating it to a moderate temperature (e.g. 250 DEG C). If the reaction is performed in a reactor having nitrided steel inner surfaces the formation of high carbon particles is avoided. The powder may be in the 'A' form (i.e. discrete spheres) or the 'B' form (i.e. interlocking chains of interconnected spheres).
