Abstract
PURPOSE:To decompose effectively NH3 by oxidation even when steam is mixed in exhaust gas by using a catalyst consisting of a combination of specific metal oxides. CONSTITUTION:A cobalt-containing compound, e.g., cobalt oxide, cobalt nitrate, etc., together with, as needed, a chromium-containing compound, e.g., chromium oxide, chromium nitrate, etc., are dissolved in a solvent, e.g., water, etc., and then titanium oxide powder is uniformly dispersed in the solution. Then, the suspension is neutralized with ammonia, etc., molded into a shape, and then calcined to obtain a catalyst. The catalyst thus obtained is filled in solid catalyst layer and an exhaust gas containing O2 and NH3 is passed through the solid catalyst layer, whereupon NH3 present in the exhaust gas is effectively decomposed into N2 and H2O even when mixed with 10% or more steam.
