Abstract

1463855 Treating waste gas containing nitrogen oxides TAKEDA YAKUHIN KOGYO KK 12 July 1974 [12 July 1973 21 Sept 1973 20 Dec 1973] 30930/74 Heading C1A Waste gases containing nitrogen oxides are contacted with activated carbon in the presence of gaseous ammonia at a temperature in the range 110‹ to 350‹ C. to convert the nitrogen oxide to nitrogen. The gaseous ammonia is preferably present in a ratio of not less than 2/3 mole per mole, particularly 1-50 moles per mole of the nitrogen oxide in terms of NO contained in the waste gas. The gaseous ammonia may be mixed with waste gas after being diluted with a gaseous diluent such as air, N 2 or CO 2 , particularly when the waste gas is free from O 2 it is desirable to add air so as to give O 2 in the proportion of not less than 0À5 mole per mole. The activated carbon preferably has a surface area of 200 to 2000 m<SP>2</SP>/g. and may have supported thereon one or more of Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, V, Mo and W, or compounds thereof preferably in amounts of not less than 0À001 parts by weight metal per part of activated carbon. The activated carbon may be oxidized with an aqueous solution of H 2 O 2 , HNO 3 , K 2 MnO 4 or NaClO 3 or with a gas such as O 2 , O 3 , SO 3 , SO 2 , N 2 O, NO or NO 2 . When the waste gas also contains sulphur oxides these are converted to and adsorbed as sulphuric acid and/or ammonium sulphate on the activated carbon. The activated carbon may be regenerated by washing it with water, preferably at between 20‹ and 90‹ C. or by heating at above 250‹ C, preferably 350‹ to 800‹ C. The waste gas is preferably contacted with the activated carbon at between 150‹ and 250‹ C. with a space velocity of 100 to 100,000 hr.<SP>-1</SP>.
