Abstract

1,250,934. Nitride dispersed austenitic steel. ALLEGHENY LUDLUM STEEL CORP. May 30, 1969 [June 7, 1968j, No.27628/69. Heading C7D. An austenitic steel containing an element which will form a nitride with a free energy of formation greater than - 21, 000 cal/mol, is treated with a nitrogen - containing atmosphere at between 1,600‹F. and its melting point, to form dispersed nitride particles having an interparticle spacing of less than 10 microns (e.g. less than 2 microns) the element being chosen so that the nitride has a low solubility in the steel with a corresponding low tendency to grain coarsening at high temperatures. The additional element is preferably Ti, but may be Al, Nb or V; and the nitriding atmosphere may be NH 3 and/or N 2 which is substantially free from water and oxygen. Examples refer to the treatment of an 18% Cr, 12% Ni stainless steel containing 2% Ti.
