Abstract

1314601 High silicon stainless steel ARMCO STEEL CORP 12 Aug 1970 [13 Aug 1969] 38862/70 Heading C7A An austenitic stainless steel consists in per cent by weight of: the balance apart from impurities being Fe, with the proviso that when Mo is less than 5%, W less than 8À5%, Nb/Ta less than 1À5% and vanadium and tantalum are absent, the silicon content is at least 7%. The carbon content should preferably not exceed 1À15% and Cu may be present up to 4%. Other impurities which are specified are N up to 0À05%, P up to 0À04%, S up to 0À02% and Mn up to 0À61%. The alloy may be solution heat treated at 1095-1260‹C, followed after cooling by reheating to 650-815‹C. The alloy may be fabricated by brazing, welding, pressing, bending, cutting, sawing, drilling, threading or tapping and finds use in food processing, chemical, petrochemical, nuclear and agricultural fields examples thereof being given.
