Abstract

While being subjected to a stream vacuum degassing process molten metal is subjected to the action of a plasma stream whereby temperature losses are reduced and reactions may be effected. The plasma jet may use an inert gas such as argon, or may use one or more reactive gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, methane, carbon tetrachloride, chlorine or sodium vapour, in which case the reaction effect of the gases may be enhanced by the addition to the plasma gas of catalysts such as calcium, cobalt, vanadium, tungsten or titanium in small quantities such as 10 - 25% of the gas weight.
