Abstract

1,248,595. Chlorinating &c. ores in high intensity arcs. IONARC SMELTERS Ltd. (NPL). 11 Dec., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 58951/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division H5] Powdered ore is heat-treated in a "high intensity arc", (with an elongated tailflame), with a controlled atmosphere (see Divisions H3-H5 for apparatus), inter alia, to put the metals in an easily recoverable form, e.g. as chlorides or by conversion of complex minerals to simple compounds. The material is supplied to the arc in a carrier gas which is inert, such as nitrogen or argon, or is a reactant gas such as oxygen, carbon monoxide, a halogen-containing gas, natural gas, air or hydrogen. A pre-heating step using a conventional plasma torch is mentioned. Specific metals mentioned in the ores include iron, aluminium, magnesium, nickel, cobalt, copper and traces of gold, silver, and platinum group metals. Using added NaCl, or a chlorine carrier gas, the precious metals may be extracted as chlorides from an ore. Specific examples refer to heat treating (1) the residue from pressure leaching a Ni-Co concentrate, the treatment enabling the Ni to be simply extracted by leaching or after chlorination using chlorine as the plasma arc gas or adding sodium chloride to the feed material; and (2) Au- and Pt-bearing Tulameen sand with 10% addition of NaCl or using chlorine carrier gas, the treatment significantly increasing the concentrations of Au and Pt obtained in chloride form.
