Abstract

1456065 Oxygen leach process FALCONBRIDGE NICKEL MINES Ltd 31 May 1974 24151/74 Addition to 1378051 Heading C1A Metal values are recovered from particulate sulphides containing at least two metals selected from nickel, copper and precious metals by leaching with oxygen-containing gas an aqueous slurry of the particles in an acidic cuprous ion bearing solution whose redox potential increases on feeding gas thereto and decreases on feeding of sulphide particles. The redox potential of the slurry is monitored and the gas feed controlled relative to the particle feed so as to maintain the potential at or below a selected value at which one metal value is leached preferentially with respect to the other metal values contained in the sulphide particles. The oxygenacid leach combination can also be used for the dissolution of copper free matte as taught in the main patent (British Patent Specification 1,378,051) for chlorine leaching.
