Abstract

A process for the production and refining of iron and alloys containing iron as the preponderating constituent comprises establishing an arc between a tubular electrode of carbon, or like material of relatively low consumption rate, and the metal and passing an inert or reducing gas through the bore of the electrode to the arc. The gas may be argon, helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, coal gas, natural gas, producer gas, water gas, coke oven gas, blast furnace gas or a mixture of two or more of these gases or gas mixtures. The Provisional Specification describes also the addition of slag-making or alloying additions in powder form in suspension in the gas to the metal bath.
