Abstract

Molten metals, such as iron, or alloys are treated by establishing an electric arc between a tubular electrode and the melt and feeding solid material together with a stream of inert or reducing gas through the electrode so that the material passes through the arc before reaching the melt. The solid material may be fed through the electrode in suspension in a gas stream, or it may be fed mechanically or by gravity, or it may be packed in a tube formed of a material rapidly consumable in the arc, the tube being fed through the electrode. The solid material may be a slag-making material such as lime, limestone, iron oxide, fluorsfar or bauxite, or a dioxidizing or alloying material such as aluminium, ferro-silicon or other ferro-alloy. The gases used may be nitrogen, hydrogen, argon, helium, xenon, carbon monoxide, methane, industrial gases, or mixtures thereof. The operation may be performed in a Bessemer type converter, the hollow electrode being inserted in the mouth of the converter to carry out dephosphorization for example before the normal blow.
