Abstract

A fibre of e.g. silica, which may be preformed or drawn from a fused rod or a source of molten silica, is coated with a metal, e.g. aluminium or its alloys, by drawing it through the molten metal in a nozzle, as described in the parent Specification, whilst surrounding the fibre with an atmosphere containing not more than 5% of oxygen by weight, e.g. argon, nitrogen, hydrogen, helium, carbon monoxide or dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia or chlorine. In a modification (see Fig.3, not shown) the fibre is open to oxygen during coating, but not after coating.
