Abstract

A method of producing high purity iron comprises melting a high quality iron, adding to the melt under an inert atmosphere a substance which will react with the impurities present, and subjecting the melt to a pressure not greater than 0.1m mm. of mercury. The substance may be a rare earth element, e.g. cerium, and the inert atmosphere may be argon. The inert gas may be pumped through the metal after the addition of cerium and hydrogen may be pumped through the metal before the inert gas is added.
