Abstract
A method of preparing pure chromium which is ductile at room temperature comprises heating chromium flakes or particles for 10-20 hours at 1500-1200 DEG C. in hydrogen to remove oxygen, cooling to room temperature, heating for 10-20 hours at 1200-1000 DEG C. under a pressure of less than 1 mm. of mercury to remove nitrogen, and cooling to room temperature. The oxygen content may be reduced to less than 0.02 per cent and the nitrogen to less than 0.0005 per cent. The chromium flakes may be melted under an inert atmosphere and cast into ingots or may be used for the manufacture of alloys which are stated also to be ductile. Hot working of the chromium should be kept to a minimum and any nitrogen absorbed at the surface may be removed by a treatment under vacuum.
