Abstract
Steel of an ultimate tensile strength of 80 tons per square inch after heat treatment is obtained in a batch process by subjecting the steel to a vacuum treatment while in the molten state. The vacuum treatment may be applied during manufacture of the steel before or after the addition of alloying elements and under such conditions that contamination of the metal before casting is prevented. Steel ingots may be remelted under a low pressure, e.g. 5-10 cms. of mercury, of hydrogen, held under a vacuum of 0,0.5 m.m. of mercury for 1 hour after which the pressure may be slowly raised and the metal cast. The finished steel may be rolled into bars and heat treated, e.g. for En 31 steel as follows: quench from 850 DEG C. into oil at 50-60 DEG C., allow to stand for two days, immerse in solid carbon monoxide for 15 minutes, allow to stand for two days, temper at 250 DEG C. for 1 hour and cool in air.
