Abstract

In the production of a magnetic material the carbon content of a conventionally produced steel is adjusted to 0.03-0.10% in the furnace, after which the carbon: oxygen ratio is adjusted to a predetermined value such as 3:4 by addition of a deoxidizer such as aluminium, silicon or ferrosilicon, or of carbon. The metal is then subjected to a vacuum degassing process, preferably of the batch type, as a result of which the carbon content is reduced to below 0.03%. Alloying elements such as aluminium, silicon or molybdenum are then added and the metal cast. As exemplified, an alloy containing 0.5% silicon was hot-rolled, heat-treated at 760 DEG C., cold-rolled, open-annealed above the recrystallization temperature, finally cold-rolled and annealed at 850 DEG C. An alloy containing 3.1% silicon was hot rolled, annealed at 780 DEG C., cold-rolled, annealed at 900 DEG C., cold rolled, annealed at 800 DEG C. and finally annealed at 1150 DEG C.
